Kat Chavez is a printmaker and painter whose work often centers around themes of death, the manipulated female body, her complicated relationship with Spanish, and mental health. She finds her deepest inspiration in Ana Mendieta, Teresa Margolles, Judy Baca, Frida Kahlo, and the history of both murals and prints in the Chicano art movement. One of the main goals of her artistic practice is to invite people to be intimate with death, and understand their bodies as physical material inextricable from emotional experience. Kat’s identity as a Xicana and a brown, demisexual womxn deeply informs her work. She is currently pursuing her B.A. in Art History and Visual Art at Brown University. In addition to Providence, she also calls Los Angeles, California her home, where she has worked passionately in youth arts education. Kat is currently exploring oil painting and practices for natural self-healing.
