Mis muertos
A solo exhibition by kat chavez
"El día de los muertos is a holiday celebrated throughout Latin America, with specific cultural practices varying by region. Since I was very young, my anticipation of this holiday led October to be a month of reflection and eventual celebration. My Mexican grandparents passed away before I was born, and in many ways, remembering them during this holiday was a mystical experience. If I had never known them, how could I remember them? Could I remember, or could I only imagine?
The works in this show were almost all created in the past month as part of my process of remembering and honoring the dead. They deal mainly with the physical, bodily manifestations of my memories. I imagine this space to be a kind of altar to my lost ancestors, and I invite you to add the names of your dead to one of the walls so that they may also be remembered."
¿Se aculillo? / Are you scared?
An exhibit of contemporary Latine / Latinx artists
October 1 – October 31, 2017
Curated by Benjamin Lundberg Torres Sanchez
¿Se aculillo? / Are you scared? is a one-month pop up exhibit in AS220’s Resident Gallery showcasing visual artists’ reckonings with fear: PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE.
The phrase. ¿Se aculillo?, is a Colombian taunt that roughly translates to, “Are you scared?” More literally, aculillo refers to a sensation of the body clenching or curling inward.
