Virtual Teaching
Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, I had started teaching a course for 6- and 7-year-olds as part of the Brooklyn Museum’s Gallery/Studio Program. When we all went into quarantine, I began to explore virtual teaching with students, using small-scale art-making activities and references to the Brooklyn Museum’s collection.
This 4-session virtual course focused on the following themes:
Fantasy Portraiture (inspired by the work of May Wilson and the Brooklyn Museum’s Assyrian Reliefs)
Bookmaking, Symbols, and Storytelling (inspired by the work of Sun Xun, Xu Bing, and the Thunderbird Transformation Mask)
Fabric Collage (inspired by the work of Anna Williams)
Music and Art (inspired by the work of Stuart Davis)
Found-Object Sculpture (inspired by the work of Betye Saar)
The course included 4 one-hour virtual sessions and 8 self-guided activities that were emailed to families in PDF form, each inspired by a Brooklyn Museum collection artwork.
